More Battery Power for Palm VII

techcounselor @ 3/24/2000 9:26:43 PM #
The Palm VII needs a similar power rejuvenation. The wireless capability truly wears thin on 2 AAA batteries. H_EL_P SOON!!!!!

OK, I found a site that actually sells this product for both the Palm III and VII they also have some for the Palm M100/M105 and the Handspring Visor. The site is at www.oceanbattery.com They also have the same sort of thing for a gameboy.

Visor

Will it also com out for the visor?

If it is available, or will become available for Visor, this seems ideal in combination with the Handy GPS springboard module reported to come out next month (April). The springboard module reportedly shortens the battery life to about 6 hours, however, since you would be more likely to use in the car on a trip, a cigarette adaptor would be a logical and ideal companion to this springboard.

The input can be 12Volts as well. There is a regulator on board.

Actually dumbuser, I did see the other rechargeable at Visor Central your referring to. Pretty cool. But I happen to be electronically inept, so I'm likely to opt out of anything involving a soldering iron.

This alternative looks like a simple "plug and play" option.

They have built a visor adapter. The information is at www.oceanbattery.com

So, is there somewhere I can get this?

Kris @ 3/25/2000 6:37:25 PM #
Come on guys, you review the product, give us the company's URL...

The company that is developing this does not have a website yet. If you are interested in contacting them you can get ahold of them here:

sweet!

That's great! I can't wait to order one! My Palm IIIe doesn't EAT batteries, but I replace them every 9-12 days. So it will be VERY useful.

4-1/2 out of 5 stars!

This would be perfect if it could be integrated in a HotSync cradle.

In fact, I've just bought 4 AAA NiMH batteries and a charger. All of them only cost me NT$750 (about US$25). Althought it could be greatful when using a HotSync, it may be a little too expensive!

Actually, I don't think the price is too high at all. Given the stated expected life of NiMH batteries, each time you recharge them it's the equivalent of buying alkaline batteries at a penny apiece.

The NiMH batteries are rechargeable up to 1000 times and are available separately or with the PDA Pal kit at www.oceanbattery.com

Battery meter?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2000 9:43:51 AM #
What about the battery meter? NiMH cells have a lower voltage (1.2V if I remember right) so the pack will not be 3V when fully charged. Also, the voltage x charge left is different so the low battery alert will show up too soon (or too late).

One of the changes in PalmOS for the Palm V was support for rechargeble batteries, but I don't know if it's automatic.

I have used Rayovac Rechargeable Alkaline batteries and one of their advantage is that they are 1.5V.

Battery meter SOLUTION
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/28/2000 5:06:18 PM #
You can change the battery meter according to which kind of batteries you use. There is a dot command to do this, but I can't remember what it is (go to www.palmgear.com/faq and do a search on "batteries" or "dot commands" for specifics). David Pogue also discusses this in "The Ultimate Guide" (there's a subtitle, but a friend has mine right now, so I can't refer to it).
