GPS Signals No Longer Scrambled

President Clinton has ordered that civilians be given access to the Global Position System without the signals being scrambled. This means that units that previously were accurate to within 100 yards should now be accurate within 10 yards. This has already gone into affect so any reports on the accuracy of GPS units would be gratefully received. Mr. Clinton said this was intended to "encourage acceptance and integration of GPS into peaceful civil, commercial and scientific applications worldwide; and to encourage private sector investment in and use of U.S. GPS technologies and services."

From the press conference: "For example, cell phones are going to be required to have positioning systems as a part of the 911 part of the activity." Hey crims, turn that cell phone off before you blow the safe!

but" CLASS=NEWS>http://www.randmcnally.com/?area=store&content=/store/product.ehtml?sku=1009874
but I might wait if this will go into effect in the near future!?

It won't matter. The receivers don't have to be changed to benifit from the more accurate signals. Think of it
like your local radio station had running a blender in the background while the news was being read. If the turned
the blender off, you'd get a better signal from your existing radio.

Cheers,
Bob

Supposedly the change has already gone into effect. If anyone out there has a GPS unit and could confirm this is would be appreciated.

I am very happy with my Earth Mate Road Warrior on my Palm IIIx. I have indeed noticed a more accurate listing of my little circle on the maps I use. In particular it's hitting my route turns more accurately. I use mine day in and day out and love it.

I found my answer
