Comments on: Garmin Discontinues All Remaining iQue Models

In case anyone has not had their fill of depressing Palm OS-related news this week, we have just received word that Garmin has officially discontinued their final two Palm OS-based handhelds with integrated GPS functionality. In actuality, Garmin's PDA line has been dying a long, protracted death for several years as the company shifted its focus to standalone GPS navigators and add-on mapping software partnered with a Bluetooth GPS receiver such as the Mobile 10, 20 and XT packages.

Garmin's iQue 3600a, the specialized aviation version of the original iQue 3600, has finally been put out to pasture, juding by the product's "discontinued" status on its web page.

So, does anyone still think...

Nah, just reinforcing my LONG-held-right-here belief that PALM would be absolutely NUTS to expend ANY resources on such a thing.

About as stupid as trying to develop TWO different versions of Linux. Then throwing one away and bringing in an outside company to develop the second one. Then throwing THAT away.

One can hope they've ... you know ... learned.

It's a sad day when folks once known as "Palm Fan Boys" retreat, however...

I really had hoped they would get their act together soon (my true feelings would be slightly re-worded) but it's been nearly 3 years since the T|X started shipping. Where is the Innovation and excitement that was characteristic of Palm, their platform and the devices that ran on it? Today, the latest innovations are in what color do we inject our current Centro devices with? A question of innovation or disparity I ask? PalmOS 5.4.9 has been on every PalmOS device they released since mid 2005. It's tired, aged and ready to be put out to pasture.

I truly hope Palm rises to the top and excites us once again. Will it happen? I'm, unfortunately, doubtful. If they do, I will be happy once again.

Palm is actually going to be around to release Nova?

It appears they will, unless the new system (aka Nova) is delivered much much later than Palm management is currently predicting. The WinMo and Centro devices should see them through 2008.

Me, I'm still waiting for _this_ headline ...

"Apple releases $399 'iPod MacBook Touch Air' tablet computer"...

Here we are in March, Mike. Another five days, ya think?

Who said it'd be $399? What code have YOU been inhaling?

lefty - sorry, but nobody cares about ALP.

RE: Still waiting for THIS headline ...

Probably more accurate to say...
Few people care about ALP until we see it on some viable, shipping hardware.
RE: Still waiting for THIS headline ...
Gekko @ 3/2/2008 4:02:30 PM # Q

and the constant Google and Apple bashing appear pathetic and desperate.

Who said it'd be $399?

Well, you're the one who says it's going to "cannibalize" iPod Touch and iPhone sales, whatever this mythical beast turns out to be, right? How expensive can it possibly be and still be in that product category...?

I suppose I'm one of the "small number" who care about ALP, at least to the extent that it is still a possible upgrade path for my future handheld needs (whether PDA or smartphone). And since SV has assured us that Palm will not support Garnet apps in their new OS, we can know with certainty that that won't be an option for those of us who still want to run some of our old apps, so Nova is out. :D But regardless, I'm very happy to hear what Lefty has to say about ALP, particularly since the vast majority of what is being said about it by most of the rest of the people on this site is pure conjecture.

Yeah, but who listens to you, bratwurst-fingers?

RE: Still waiting for THIS headline ...
twrock @ 3/2/2008 9:13:48 PM # Q
Probably no one.
But then again, I don't have a blog where I'm desperately trying to get everyone to do so. So it's not a "need" thing for me.

Oh, I don't take Mr. Lizard seriously when he uses terms like "everyone" and "nobody": they both mean "me" as far as he's concerned. There's been enough discussion of ALP to substantiate that we're talking about fairly small values of "nobody" here (and of course, no one's holding a gun to his reptilian head and forcing him to participate, by any means. He evidently cares enough to let me know how little he cares. Go figure.)

...pure conjecture...

A lot of it isn't even good conjecture. Kinda like Mike's "iPod Air" conspiracy theory.

You don't have enough to say to have a blog. Yeah, that's a dare, wurst-digits.

There's an article in the New York Times today that speculates that Apple is doing something like that:

http://tinyurl.com/2gb6u6

Apparently the iPhone started as a tablet-sized "Safari Pad," and there's speculation that Apple is moving back in that direction.
