Best Buy Palm PDA Holiday Sale

Palm TX SaleDespite the lack of any commitment or rumors of new handhelds from Palm, major retailers are continuing to crank out major discounts on Palm PDAs. This time around, both the Palm Tungsten E2 and TX are substantially discounted for Best Buy's weekly flyer. The prices on both units are identical to this week's Staples offer and similar to what was offered by the Palm Store's "Black Friday" sale last month but without the free bundled accessories. The BestBuy sale prices are also good at BestBuy.com with free shipping included until the end of the month.

The Palm TX is currently on sale for an ultra-low $199.00 after a $115 instant rebate off of Best Buy's strangely higher-than-MSRP TX price of $314.99. The Palm TX, alongside the Z22, is the most recent of Palm's remaining PDA lineup, having been introduced in October 2005 and featuring both Bluetooth and wi-fi alongside OS 5.4.9, 128MB of RAM and a 320x480 LCD.

The older but still popular Tungsten E2 is on sale for $149.00, $60 off of its standard price of $209.99. The Tungsten E2 runs Garnet OS 5.4.7 mated to a 320x320 LCD, Bluetooth wireless, and an SD slot and stereo headphone jack.

The TX deal is definitely the better of the two Best Buy offers due to offering a larger screen, wi-fi wireless capabilities, extra RAM, and a slightly newer OS and software bundle for just $50 more.

BestBuy Palm PDA Sale

With Palm's handhelds unfortunately starting to disappear from most brick and mortar retail chains, Best Buy's sale joins this week's Staples deal as one of the last chances to get a new, factory-fresh Palm handheld from a reputable merchant for a considerably reduced price. I personally visited the local Best Buy last night and was stunned to find them completely sold out of Palm TX’s, with just a few E2’s remaining. Plenty of Z22’s remained, however, as it is not part of this week’s discounting.

Best Buy’s sale pricing is valid both in retail stores and online through this Saturday, December 15th. Best Buy does offer a fairly reasonable return policy along with the usual extended warranty offersing. In addition, the Best Buy Reward Zone gift certificate program rewards purchasers of all in-store items, unlike the limited Staples and Office Depot programs.

Both $100 overpriced

Someday *someone* at Palm will catch on.

Bueller? Rubenstein? Bueller?

This is now a world where I can get a *subnotebook* for less than $500. Next month, one with a *30GB hard drive* for $400.

This is now a world where Sandisk is offering a better MP3 player than the iPod Shuffle for just $40.

This is now a world where PDAs over $99 is a bad joke.

I'd have to disagree somewhat. These (TX-$199 E2-$149) should have been their prices for the last year. The Zire should be about $50. You can't discredit how many different things the TX is capable of doing such as Music, Video, Wifi for Web and Email, ect. As I've posted before, when my TX screen broke in October I was all ready to jump ship for something(anything) else but Palm, but the Black Friday Sale was enough to keep me on board.

PDA's Past and Present:
Palm TX (Number 2)
Palm - IIIxe, Vx, M500, M505, Tungsten T, TX
Handspring - Edge, Platinum, Deluxe
Sony - SJ22
Casio-EM500
Apple - MP110, MP2000, MP2100

They should be $49 and $99.

The Zire should be free in boxes of cereal. OK, then free for two boxtops and $4 postage.

The TX ought to be selling in the $99-$159 range by now. The E2, Z22 should've been combined into a single model (E2 specs but cheaper Z22 case) selling for around $49-$69.

Then get some sync/player software going with Amazon music and e-books.

Palm's biggest problem is that they've lost any touch with reality as to the market ... and they certainly don't have a marketing plan. As it is, a $299 iPod touch is more appealing: full browser, nice screen, iTunes Store, easy sync, etc.

Palm TX: Buyer Recommended

mikecane @ 12/13/2007 12:02:43 PM # Q
NOT!

>>>Considering the issues I had with my Palm TX, I'm not surprised. Of course it quit working with wifi and went into an endless loop after the warranty expired. The cost to get it fixed was almost the price of a new one.

Good look with that sale, Palm. Let me know when I can get one for $99.

Er, maybe.

Mike, I can recommend the TX and you know I'm not astroturfing or a paid apologist.

I've used my TX DAILY since I got it in Oct/Nov '05. Besides the battery finally to show some signs of weakening, it's performed flawlessly. And it doesn't creak & groan not has the power button hasn't gotten mushy like my T5's did.

It's honestly the most reliable Palm (from a physical build quality AND OS stability standpoint) device I've used since my T|T2 or T|C.

I can recommend that you STAY AWAY from the TX unless you absolutely need a replacement device. Build quality is down-right atrocious. I bought mine for Christmas in 2005. My power button is dead (year and a half later) and so is the built-in speaker(eight months). Luckily the head-set jack is still working. By contrast my old Palm V and Visor Edge are still functional (the springboard modules too). I moved off the Edge only because of the TX's BlueTooth and Wi-Fi.

Can I still get a Mac SE?

adamsmark @ 12/13/2007 2:15:49 PM # Q
While we are on the topic of buying old computer equipment, can I still get a Mac SE? I really liked my old Mac.

Check ebay. You can get everything on ebay.

I just dumped out my old SE last spring. The picture tube went out but up until that time I still used it for games, as well as documents and spreadsheets. You'd be surprised how quick everything was on that machine without the heavy graphics that we require now. I also had the carry along bag which made taking it with me real nice.

I have an SE that's in pretty good shape. For what it'd cost to ship it someone, I'm not quite willing to give it up yet. I'm sure you could find one for free somewhere if you look ... probably the same for these old Palms or at least one with similar specs.

Folks, my old SE is sitting on the top shelf in my classroom (where it belongs). Dang, holding a sale on a TX, as if it's still a contending product, is a joke.

Quit Whining!

PalmBerry @ 12/14/2007 5:04:45 PM # Q
If you're looking to Switch, this the time. The Centro is my 5th or 6th Palm and it's awesome... If you like small, this is it. Some people may not like the tiny keys, I had a treo for years and I don't mind the smaller keys.

Listening the Press Reports about Palm's demise, I (Stupidly) switched to a Sprint Mogul & Windows Mobile. Journalists are idi*ts! The Mogul was the worst phone I've ever owned in every respect. The Phone was terrible, Windows Mobile is a joke. I've never had a worse experience... Windows 95 was better.

Enough about that, I ordered my "replacement" phone after 3 long, painful months. I was going to go back to the Treo (which looked tons better after the Mogul), but read the reviews and played with the Centro in the store.

I don't look at it as cheap replacement for a Treo. I look at it as an upgrade. I love the smaller size.... and believe it or not, it's Faster!

With internet service, I now sync my Avantgo (w/PalmInfoCenter) over the air now. I only need to manually sync my contact list once or twice a month now.

My advice if you on the fence.... GO FOR IT! .... YOU CAN DO IT! (I'm not the RA RA kind of guy, but after the Mogul, it's like a get out jail free card!)
