Gizmodo has wasted no time in getting on with the inevitable smartphone comparison contests, recently
running a piece comparing
Palm's precocious new Pre against its Apple-born arch-nemesis. The Pre does amazingly well, with the Pre/iPhone scoreboard finishing up at 10-5. While some of their calls are a bit iffy - especially iPhone winning the "keyboard" category - it's worth a read and reinforces just what a giant leap Palm's New-ness has turned out to be for the company. Oh, and the G1 turned up as well, for all the good it did it.
Hit the jump for Gizmodo's category list, along with PIC's own commentary.

Nearly lost amidst this week's flurry of news surrounding the
Palm Pre and
WebOS, even more solid evidence has surfaced confirming the existence of a CDMA
Treo Pro. The CDMA version has now earned a stamp of approval from the FCC and a few of the supporting documents are
now online.
Palm has likely held off making an official announcement of this anticipated release until existing Treo 800w stocks are depleted or until the smoke clears in the aftermath of Palm's enormous CES announcements. Palm's CDMA version of the Pro will be its second EVDO Rev.A-capable device and is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1.

Rumor: Just days after Palm announced the exciting
Pre phone with a drastically new formfactor, rumors have already begun to surface regarding the next device destined to run Palm's new
WebOS.
I heard from a seemingly reliable firsthand source that Palm is prepping a new Centro 2 to debut later this fall on Sprint. It will supposedly be around the same size as the current Centro and will be powered by the Palm WebOS.
Adding further substance to the rumor is a PCMag article addressing the top fifteen questions surrounding Palm's new platform. According to them, the device will omit the QWERTY keyboard in order to maximize the available screen real estate necessary for the various icons and cards that form the basis of WebOS.

In the two days following
Palm's WebOS and
Palm Pre announcement, Ryan and I have spent a great deal of time speaking with Palm representatives, watching demos, and talking at length about the new hardware and software platforms. In this article I take a close look at the Palm Pre hardware and answer many of the questions surrounding Palm's new hotly anticipated smartphone.

UPDATED (1/13) I just noticed a gigantic banner installed in the South Hall entrance here at CES (posted after the break). It seems that Palm has managed a massive turnaround of perception given their recent struggles.
In another positive sign that Palm's resurrection is at hand, the Pre has just been awarded CNET's "Best of CES 2009" award, for "Best in show" as well as the "People‘s Voice Award". The Pre beat out the Motorola Surf A3100 (rather unimpressive) and the LG Watch Phone (a very stunning device, I must admit) in the Cell Phonjes and Smartphomnes Category.

If you still haven't gotten your fill of webOS and Pre goodness, Palm has now posted the
full video of their CES presentation on their
Pre page at Palm.com. The 377.9mb .mov file runs for 1 hour 7 minutes, so while you're waiting for the download you can whet your appetite with
PIC's own CES coverage, including our own hands-on Pre experience
here and
here (with much more on the way).

Sitting alongside a demo table in the Palm VIP lounge at CES we spotted the Pre's retail packaging. The current box, while not likely a final version, appears nearly identical to the
Treo Pro's setup. Checkout our previous
Treo Pro unboxing for more on that. The Pre's much is much the same on the outside, and likely carries over Palm's new elegantly minimalist approach to retail packaging.

Next in our series of video updates from CES, we've put together three new hands on clips of the Palm Pre. In the first clip we have a demonstration of the Palm webOS Copy and Paste ability. Following that we have a ~2 minute clip of the Pre's web browser visiting everyones favorite Palm site live on the device. You can see the Pre render the standard version PIC and scroll around, zoom in and out as well as viewing it in landscape mode. The third video takes a longer look at more of the gesture functionality and using the application card system. Read on to watch the videos.

After a long drown out
decline and near
dips below the dollar line, Palm's stock has make a commanding recovery since the new announcements. After the conclusion of Palm's presentation, late-day trading activity responded strongly in Palm's favor, sending the stock up 35%.
The market seems to be responding positively to the new Pre smartphone and WebOS platform. In trading today price is continuing its climb and is currently trading around $6. This is a pleasant turn of events from Palm's dismal financial performance of late, as the stock was trading in the low $3 neighborhood at the beginning of the week.

Next in our series of videos comes a live hands on demo of the
Palm Pre. I have spliced together some footage of the Pre at the Palm lounge following the
announcement event. This video runs a little over 3 minutes and includes a hardware overview by Palm's Sachin Kansal and looks at a few of the webOS gestures in action.

The new Palm Pre is also arriving with a handful of nice accessories in tow. Some of them are the standard chargers and cases that come with any new device release but some of the others merit particular attention.
Palm ended their presentation today with a nice surprise that is by far the main accessory news related to the Pre. Resembling a hockey puck with a severely sloping front, the Touchstone is a charging dock that permits wireless recharging of the Pre via induction technology. The Touchstone looks to compliment the Pre with its sleek, black, iconic look. Its interesting to see the innovation carry over to the typical afterthought that is a docking cradle.

We've just uploaded the first of our series of video highlights from Palm's CES event today. For starters, we've posted the first few minutes showcasing Jon Rubinstein and Ed Colligan's introduction of the most impressive hardware release in Palm's history. In addition, we've got a 8 minute clip of the live demonstration of the
WebOS UI and features on the
Palm Pre during the event.
As time permits, we will be posting additional details, videos and articles from CES. In the meantime enjoy these first videos after the break.
