Palm Removes the Sprint 700p MR Update

Palm has temporarily removed the recently posted and oft-delayed Treo 700p maintenance release, which was posted early Monday for Sprint 700p's. Palm says it has received isolated reports of an installation issue that causes the device to continuously reset when applying the software update. A few reports of endless reset loop issues after updating were posted by PalmInfocenter readers as well. According to a few unconfirmed reader reports, Palm and Sprint are issuing replacement devices to users who experienced problems (i.e. bricked devices) due to the update. Palm support is encouraging users who have experienced an issue with the maintenance release installation contact them at: 1-866-750-7256.

Palm's Paul Loeffler has posted a statement on the Palm blog: "We're investigating the issue and will make the Sprint Treo 700p update available again as soon as possible. We know this has been a frustrating process for customers and apologize for the inconvenience it may have caused."

Palm Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard Review

Palm Wireless Keyboard AccessoryA few days prior to the big announcement of the Foleo, Palm trotted out brief a press release announcing the availability of the latest in a long line of Palm-branded accessory keyboards. Despite bearing a generic mouthful of a title: the Palm Wireless Keyboard with Bluetooth Wireless Technology, this new keyboard is a surprisingly strong entry into a field that’s far less crowded than it was a few years ago.

CNET Interview with Jeff Hawkins

News.com has posted an interview with Palm and Handspring founder and Pilot creator Jeff Hawkins. Taking place in the immediate aftermath of the D5 symposium and Foleo unveiling, the article is written by Ina Fried, a CNET tech reporter. Ina was joined for the gathering by our very own Ryan Kairer and Dieter Bohn from TreoCentral in this quick but fairly enlightening Q&A-type session. An additional piece containing additional information and some feedback from Dieter can be found here on the Treocentral site.

Entitled "The best idea Hawkins ever had", the interview excerpts posted by CNET comprise a 2-page piece listing most questions highlights asked by all three interviewers as well as Hawkins' responses. Hawkins primarily retreats ground covered in the earlier presentation in outlining why he thinks the Foleo will usher in a new era of personal computing. The 2nd page of the article goes onto address the Foleo's role in shaping future Treo designs, including a tantalizing tidbit about a possible future Treo devoid of a keyboard and/or with a larger screen.

Otterbox 1921 Treo Case Review

Otterbox Treo Case ReviewI've known about the Otterbox line of cases for several years now but never really gave them a second thought as something I’d carry for daily usage. Concurrent with the launch of the 755p, Ryan sent me a review unit of the latest Otterbox 1921 case by Otter Products. This is an improved version of the previous 1920 case and is designed to fit the latest generation of thinner, antenna-less Treos such as the 680, 750 and 755p. I’ve spent a week trying to live with the 1921 and a Sprint Treo 755p.

Treo 700p ROM Delay Confirmed Again

Following up on yesterday's news item on Palm's "hidden" update to their May 18th blog entry, Palm's Paul Loeffler has again made a new post to Palm's Blog. This time Mr. Loeffler has created a completely new blog entry to discuss the latest delay for the long-awaited 700p ROM update.

Via today's new post, Palm now expects the updated ROM for the Sprint version of the 700p to be available on Monday, June 4th. The new for Verizon 700p users is far more dismal. Mr. Loeffler's report on the Verizon version of the update simply states that it is not yet ready, will not be available on Monday, and no specific data is given as to when the update will be available for Verizon Treo 700ps. No word is given on the 700p versions available on smaller regional networks such as Alltel in the US or Canada's Telus.

Palm Quietly Admits to Further 700p ROM Update Delays

Avid Palm OS Treo users who either criticized or shunned the announcement of the Foleo in anticipation of the forthcoming 700p ROM update aka "Maintenance Release" are not going to be happy campers after today's announcement. The latest turn of events in the now year-long drama of the flawed 700p concerns a small update made to the official Palm Blog by Paul Loeffler, Palm's Public Relations Manager.

Buried deep within the user replies to a Palm blog post from two weeks ago, today's post by Mr. Loeffler states that the 700p update has been delayed yet again. Previous instances of Palm announcing new delays in the 700p's update schedule can be found here, here, and here. In a nutshell, Palm hopes to bring the Sprint version of the 700p update out tomorrow (Friday June 1st) but the Verizon update is delayed for an undetermined amount of time for reasons unknown. Mr. Loeffler promises an additional blog update on Friday.
