After a recent posting on
his blog in which he stated he'd "been busy with a lot of detailed work on speeding up the video playback on the Foleo", Palm software developer Ben Combee has posted some
more information on the Foleo's video capabilities, as well as putting a damper on the possibility of Flash video support any time soon. Seems that while
Foleo will indeed use its built-in Marathon accelerator for video functions, Flash video is a little different:
"The Foleo hardware is capable of playback of several video formats as the Marathon 2700G chip accelerates the operations involved in H.263, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 video. It is possible to use the hardware to support a standalone video player like TCPMP.

MobilityToday has obtained a
newly leaked shot of the
Palm Centro smartphone. The official looking picture shows a clear and detailed view of the Centro. The Sprint version is shown in a black and silver casing in the now familiar "gandolf" form-factor.
Palm has previously confirmed that the Centro will feature a new, smaller form-factor, EVDO high speed data and a touch screen display. A recent rumor report has indicated the Centro could be released by Sprint around October 14th.

Palm is indirectly denying the latest
rumor report that the Foleo's release date has been delayed. A Palm spokesperson has told PalmInfocenter that the company is still standing by its original timeframe
originally announced back in May, saying "U.S. availability for the Palm Foleo mobile companion will begin this summer."
If indeed correct, this would technically give Palm until September 23rd to make the device available. It will debut for $499, after a $100 mail-in rebate. As noted in our previous post, select developers have already received working Foleo models in retail packaging under NDA.

The Sprint-specific version of last month's
Verizon ROM update for the Treo 700w/wx is
now available for download. This updater brings the
Sprint 700wx up to software version 1.15.
The main feature of this update is, similar to the earlier Verizon versions, EVDO Dial Up Networking (DUN) capabilities in addition to Bluetooth A2DP support for audio over Bluetooth stereo headsets and various hands-free enhancements. Since the older Treo 700w was a Verizon-exclusive device, only the 700wx enhancements are pertinent to Sprint's update.

Rumor: Asian industry trade journal
Digitimes has a report out that
Palm is readying a Linux-based smartphone for an October release. The incredibly vague article is short on details but does say that more Linux-based models are forthcoming in the near future and that the Wind River Linux underpinnings will definitely be part of this new model. The article additionally goes on to say that Windows Mobile-powered products are still on the company's roadmap and, presumably, Palm OS (presumably Garnet) devices will be left to solder on as "non-mainstream technology".
The Digitimes report directly contradicts remarks from Palm CEO Ed Colligan during the last quarterly conference call. In response to a question on next generation smartphones, Colligan clearly stated that products based on a new Linux OS would not debut before sometime in calendar 2008.

Rumor: Barron's
Tech Trader Daily blog is reporting today that Deutsche Bank Palm analyst Jonathan Goldberg has a issued a brief note saying the Foleo's release date has been pushed back due to software issues.
"The product was supposed to hit Palm stores this week, but was delayed when software bugs were detected. These apparently included an inability to synchronize the Foleo with most models of the Treo, in particular the nominally high-volume Treo 680. Our contacts indicate Palm now expects the device will ship in late September/early October."
